Stanford Defeats Cougar Baseball

March 29, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - Erik Davis tossed a six-hitter to lead No. 17 Stanford past No. 28 Washington State 7-3 in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game, Saturday at Sunken Diamond.

Davis (3-1) struck out eight, walked three and gave up six hits in logging the first complete game of his collegiate career. Cougar starter Jayson Miller (3-1) went seven and one-third innings and suffered his first loss in his last 13 starts.

'We gave this game away,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'We didn't do the little things it takes to win a game.'

Stanford (11-7, 1-1 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out double by Jason Castro and a RBI-single by Randy Molina. The Cougars (16-8, 2-3 Pac-10) answered in the second with Jim Murphy's eight home run of the season leading off the frame and a two-out, run-scoring single by Shea Vucinich.

In the bottom of the second, the Cardinal produced five-straight, two-out hits to score three runs and take a 4-2 lead. The Cougars closed within 4-3 on a two-out, RBI-single by Jared Prince in the top of the third.

From there, the pitchers shut down the hitters until the bottom of the eighth when Molina and Brent Milleville singled with one out off Miller. Steve Kost came into face Sean Ratliff and gave up a three-run home run that provided Stanford some insurance.

The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
