UW Win Streak Broken In 8-1 Loss At OSU

March 29, 2008

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington baseball team had its 11-game hitting streak broken Saturday in its Pac-10 opener at Oregon State, falling to the Beavers, 8-1, in the first game of a doubleheader.

Beavers senior Mike Stutes (2-3) held the Dawgs to one unearned run on six hits over six innings to pick up the win as Oregon State improved to 12-7 overall and 1-0 in Pac-10 play. Washington's Nick Haughian (2-2) took the loss, allowing four run on five hits in his four innings. The Huskies fell to 16-7 overall and 0-1 with the loss. The two teams will play a second game Saturday due to a rainout Friday.

OSU opened up a lead with three runs in the first inning. After Garrett Nash doubled down the left-field line, right fielder Daniel Robertson laced a two-out single up the middle. After a hit batter, Ryan Ortiz doubled to drive in a second run and a wild pitch allowed the third to score.

The Huskies had a chance to score in the second, but with the bases loaded on one out, a would-be sacrifice fly to right from David Bentrott resulted in a double play when Troy Scott was thrown out at the plate on a call that brought an argument from UW head coach Ken Knutson.

After squandering chances in the second and third, the Huskies posted their first run in the fourth when Michael Burgher's two-out single drove in Kyle Conley.

But, OSU got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Joey Wong doubled and scored on a single from Chris Hopkins.

Then, the Beavers broke the game open in the fifth scoring four unearned runs. With the bases loaded on a double, a walk and an error, Hopkins walked to force in one run. A sacrifice fly from Koa Kahalahoe drove in another and Jason Ogata capped the inning with a two-run double, leaving the Beavers with a 8-1 lead after five.

The Huskies and Beavers close out the three-game series Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. game, which will air live both on KKNW AM-1150 and FSN-TV.
