Cal Varsity 8 Defeats Cornell on Last Day of Pac-10 Challenge
March 30, 2008
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - California's varsity eight defeated Cornell at the Pac-10 Challenge hosted by Stanford on Sunday, the final day of the regatta, at the Redwood Shores Lagoon. Cal also won its second varsity eight race against Cornell and its freshman eight race with the Orange Coast College second varsity eight.
'It was good opening round of racing,' Cal head coach Steve Gladstone said of the two-day event. 'We had the opportunity to see, particularly against Cornell, a solid group and see what our response would be. We were able to deal with real race pressure. By and large, I was pleased with what I saw. The JVs looked coherent and beat Cornell by about 10.5 seconds and the varsity performed well, too.'
Gladstone says that while he was happy with the varsity eight's performance in the opening regatta of 2008, he and his coaching staff will still do some tinkering with the lineup this season.
'We have an elite team of athletes this year, with plenty of interchangeable parts, and there's no question that we'll be looking at different lineups for the varsity eight as the season progresses,' he said. 'It's not so much whether one guy is more effective than the other. It's going to take some time to tease that out.'
Official times for Cal's Sunday races will follow.
Cal next competes in the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6, in San Diego, Calif.
