Diamond Dawgs Knock Off OSU, 6-4

March 30, 2008

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington baseball team avoided a sweep on the opening weekend of Pac-10 play, beating Oregon State, 6-4, Sunday at Goss Stadium.

The Huskies, who lost both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, improved to 17-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference. OSU fell to 13-8 and 2-1. The game got underway an hour and eight minutes late due to rain and hail.

Husky catcher Brett Wilcox, a junior from Bothell, led the way, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. Freshman lefty Geoff Brown (2-0) earned the win in relief, allowing one run on four hits in his three innings of work. Senior Elliott Cribby, who came on with two on and one out in the eighth, got the final five outs to earn his first save of the season.

OSU took the early lead with a run in the second as, with Ryan Ortiz aboard at second with two outs, three straight Beavers drew walks to force in a run.

In the top of the third, after a hit batter and an error, Wilcox tied the game when his double down the right-field line sent home Michael Burgher. After a second out, the Huskies went on top, 2-1, when Bradley Boyer scored from third on a wild pitch.

The Husky lead didn't last, however, as the Beavers scored two with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. After two quick outs, a pair of walks put runners at first and second. John Wallace followed with a single to left, scoring one, and a balk by Husky starter Cam Nobles allowed Ortiz to score, putting OSU back in the lead at 3-2.

In the sixth, Washington went back in front with two runs. With two runners aboard on walks and two outs, freshman Taylor Starr came on to face Boyer, who singled to center to plate Ty Rasmussen with the tying run. Wilcox followed with a single to right and then, with Kraig Sitton on in place of Starr, Boyer came in on a passed ball and a wild pitch, giving the UW a 5-3 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, OSU got back one run. With two outs and two on, Jason Ogata singled through the left side to score Chris Hopkins, cutting the lead to 5-4.

Wilcox came through with his third RBI of the game in the eighth, adding a run to the Huskies' lead with a sacrifice fly.

OSU reliever Blake Keitzman (0-3) who saw both the batters he walked come in to score in his one inning of work, was charged with the loss.

This week, the Huskies open an eight-game homestand starting with a Tuesday, 5 p.m. game vs. Portland at Husky Ballpark. Friday, Arizona comes to town for the first of three Pac-10 games. Friday's 6:30 p.m. game will be played at Safeco Field. Saturday (2:00 p.m.) and Sunday (1:00 p.m.), the Huskies and Wildcats square off at Husky Ballpark. All three Arizona games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
