No. 9 Cal Varsity 8 Beats No. 14 Notre Dame at Pac-10 Challenge

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - California won its varsity eight race against Notre Dame at the Pac-10 Challenge hosted by Stanford on Sunday, the last day of the regatta, at the Redwood Shores Lagoon. The Golden Bears' ninth-ranked varsity eight boat defeated No. 14 Notre Dame by about 20 seconds in the morning race. Cal won all five of its races on the day.
The Bears' varsity eight defeated three nationally ranked teams at the two-day Pac-10 Challenge, including No. 2 Virginia and No. 5 Ohio State on Saturday.
'We're off to a good start,' Cal head coach Dave O'Neill said. ' The varsity eight raced well throughout the weekend, and the team as a whole was terrific. There are some obvious improvements that need to be made. As a team, we're always looking to make things better, and we're already heading in that direction.'
The Bears also defeated Notre Dame in the second varsity eight race by about five seconds and in the varsity four against by about 21 seconds.
Cal's third varsity eight beat Princeton's second varsity eight by about 19 seconds. The Bears claimed the novice eight event, its last race of the Pac-10 Challenge, by about 15 seconds against UCLA.
Cal next competes at Texas on April 12 in Austin, Texas.
