Huskies Earn Regional Bid In Corvallis

INDIANAPOLIS - The Washington gymnastics team earned a bid to the NCAA West Regionals it was announced today by the NCAA. The Huskies will be seeded fourth out of six teams in Corvallis, Ore. for the meet hosted by Oregon State on Saturday, Apr. 12 at 6 p.m.
Head Coach Joanne Bowers and Assistant Coach Shanna Duggan will be reunited with some familiar faces in Corvallis, as fourth-ranked Michigan will be on hand as the region's No. 1 seed. Bowers was an assistant coach at Michigan for five years prior to coming to Seattle, and Duggan is a 2005 Wolverine alum who served as volunteer coach in 2006 before joining Bowers for her move to Washington.
Joining the Huskies and Wolverines in Corvallis will be seventh-ranked Oregon State, 17th-ranked Michigan State, San Jose State and Sacramento State.
The Huskies have now qualified for regionals in both of Bowers' two seasons after missing out in 2006. The Huskies were fifth at last year's meet with a score of 193.300.
Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event were named to each of the six regions. The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Athens, Georgia, April 24-26, hosted by the University of Georgia.
In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
All regionals, except for the Southeast, will be conducted at 6 p.m. local time, Saturday, April 12. The Southeast regional is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern time, Saturday, April 12.
