Stanford Set To Host The Stanford Invitational

    The 34th annual Stanford Invitational scheduled for Fri-Sat. Apr. 4-5 at Cobb Track and Angel Field. The Stanford Invitational is one of the biggest and highly-anticipated track meets on the West Coast, featuring many of the top collegiate and high school athletes from around the country.

    The meet begins Friday morning at 8:45 a.m. with section five of the women's 5,000 meters. The first session ends at 4:47 p.m. with the high school boy's 100 meters.

    At 5:36 p.m., competition resumes with the distance carnival, which will feature some of the best distance races of the year. The Stanford Invitational and Cobb Track have traditionally produced several record-setting performances. The top sections of the steeplechase, the 5,000 meters, and the 10,000 meters are all slated for Friday night.

    Saturday's competition begins at 9 a.m. with the high school girls 400-meter hurdles. The final event of the first session is the men's 4x400-meter relay that is scheduled for 5:29 p.m. The distance carnival will follow at 6:07 p.m., featuring the top sections of both the men's and women's 1500 meters.

    Last season the Stanford Invitational produced a record 316 athletes who achieved regional qualifying standards. Of those, 15 competed for Stanford. Graeme Hoste was the lone event winner for the Cardinal, capturing the pole vault competition with a vault of 16-9.

    Stanford track and field enters the meet with both the men's and women's teams ranked nationally by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The women are ranked No. 10 while the men are ranked No. 22.

    Competing at the Stanford Invitational will be a mixture of Pac-10, regional and national programs. In addition to their conference foes, Stanford will face national powers Arkansas, Wisconsin, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Baylor, Florida State, Tennessee, BYU and others. Sacramento State, Santa Clara, and San Francisco will also be participating.
