Berkeley - Junior Gina Leomiti was selected as the Pac-10 Player of the Week today after compiling a .750 batting average with six runs and three home runs last week for the California softball team. This was her first career Player of the Week honor. Leomiti joins sophomore Marissa Drewrey (Mar. 18) as the other Golden Bear to earn the weekly conference accolade this season.
The left fielder from San Diego helped Cal to a 3-2 record, including wins over UC Riverside, Pacific and No. 10 Arizona (on Saturday) at Levine-Fricke Field. Against UC Riverside on Mar. 25, Leomiti went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and two runs scored in a 10-4 win. The following day versus Pacific, she went a perfect 3-for-3 from the dish with a double, two runs and an RBI in Cal's 9-0 win. Against the No. 1-ranked Sun Devils of Arizona State, Leomiti had three hits on four plate appearances, including a solo home run off of the Pac-10s best pitcher - Katie Burkhart. Despite Cal's 5-2 loss to Arizona on Sunday, Leomiti smacked her sixth home run over the season in the third inning which gave Cal a 2-0 lead.
For the season, Leomiti is hitting .344 with 36 runs (a personal-best), eight doubles and 37 RBI (a personal-best).
Cal (32-12, 1-2 Pac-10) jumped two spots to No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Softball Top 25 poll released today, and entered the USA Today/NFCA Division Top 25 poll for the first time at No. 23 as well.
