Stanford Returns To Action With The PING/ASU Invitational
April 1, 2008
Stanford women's golf returns to action this weekend when they travel to Tempe, Ariz to participate in the 2008 PING/ASU Invitational. The tournament will be Fri-Sun, April 4-6 at the ASU Karsten Golf Course, a 6,230 yard par-72 course.
The Cardinal return to action after over a month off from competition. They last competed Feb. 25-27 when they finished ninth at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
'We are looking forward to the team competing again since we haven't competed since February,' said head coach Caroline O'Connor.
Stanford is led by Mari Chun who is coming off her best tournament of the season in Tucson. Chun shot a 6-over-par 219 for the tournament to finish in fourth place, her best finish of the season.
The Cardinal will face stiff competition from a 16 team field that includes Pac-10 rivals Arizona State, Arizona, California, Oregon State, USC, UCLA and Washington. In addition, they will see national competition from Denver, Georgia, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, San Francisco, San Jose State, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
'The field is one of the strongest we will face all year. It will be a good barometer for us as we head into the championships season,' offered O'Connor.
Last season Arizona State won the PING/ASU Invitational with a 13-under-par 851. Stanford finished sixth with a 24-over-par score of 888. Anna Nordqvist of ASU took the individual medal honor with a 10-under-par 206. Chun finished as the runner-up with an 8-under-par score of 208.
