Cal Athletics To Host College Sports Day on Sunday

April 2, 2008

BERKELEY - The University of California department of athletics will host College Sports Day on Sunday afternoon at Cal. Local children (eighth grade and younger) are invited to Maxwell Field from 12 to 3 p.m. to take part in fun games and instruction with members of the Golden Bear athletic teams. Over 300 children are expected for the event.

A free event, College Sports Day allows the youths to interact with collegiate student-athletes, learning what it takes to succeed on that level, both in the classroom and in the athletic arena. In addition, it is an opportunity for the Golden Bears to give back to the community and enjoy time with young student-athletes as well. There will be a variety of carnival-style games oriented to the various sports participating as well as the opportunity for autographs and photos with the Cal student-athletes.

Registration is required for the event, but parents, guardians, coaches or program staffers can register their children on Sunday prior to the event. The game booths will be open from 12:15 to 3 p.m. and lunch will be available (via concessions) from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. In addition, the nationally-ranked Cal baseball team is in action against defending national champion Oregon State at 1 p.m.

College Sports Day is a partnership between 'Coaching Corps,' a Team-Up for Youth program, and Cal Athletics, directed by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, a group of Cal student-athletes from all sports who direct many of Cal's community service activities.
