Five Huskies Earn All-Conference Honors
April 2, 2008
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Five different Husky gymnasts were named to the 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Women's Gymnastics All-Conference teams yesterday. Junior Ashley Houghting (Welland, Ont.) was named to the All-Conference First Team on the floor exercise, while four other Huskies, two freshmen and two seniors, earned second team honors.
The All-Conference First Team is made up of the top six all-around competitors, plus the top three competitors in each individual event who are not among the all-around honorees. Scores are determined by a combination of 50% regional qualifying score (RQS) and 50% Pacific-10 Conference Championship score. The All-Conference second team consists of 10 individuals, who were not honored on the first team.
Heading into NCAA Regional competition, Houghting owns a 9.885 RQS on floor, good for 25th in the nation. The 2007 Pac-10 Champ nearly added a second title last week, finishing in second place after scoring a 9.925 at the 2008 conference championships in Seattle.
On vault, freshman Haley Bogart (Woodside, Calif.) owns a 9.84 RQS (and ranks No. 68 in the nation). Last Saturday, Bogart finished in a nine-way tie for third place with a 9.85.
Two Huskies earned recognition for their efforts on the uneven bars, as seniors Raimey Iselin (Lake Tapps, Wash.) and Nikki Waiss (Mill Creek, Wash.) both scored second team honors on the event. Iselin and Waiss closed out the regular season with back-to-back ties for first place on bars. Last week, Waiss scored a season-high 9.9 to take third at Pac-10s, while Iselin matched her season-high 9.875 to finish in eighth place.
Freshman Samantha Walior (Prior Lake, Minn.) rounds out the field of Washington honorees, as she picked up a second-team selection on floor. Walior, who is ranked No. 47 in the nation with a 9.86 RQS, tied for 10th place at the Pac-10 Championships, scoring a 9.825.
The Huskies will be back in action in two weeks, as Washington earned a bid to the NCAA Regionals. UW will be seeded fourth out of six teams in Corvallis, Ore., on Saturday, Apr. 12 at 6 p.m.
