Washington Names New Football Public Address Announcer
April 3, 2008
SEATTLE - Following an extensive search for only its third full-time football announcer since the late 1940s, the University of Washington athletic department has appointed Eric Radovich as the newest voice of UW football in Husky Stadium.
Radovich, who has served as the public address announcer for Husky women's basketball since 1989 and men's basketball since 1995, was selected as one of five finalists from a pool of 45 applicants. The group of finalists were interviewed by athletic marketing and communications staff members and went through a brief trial over the public address system in Husky Stadium.
He will begin his duties at the annual spring game on Saturday, April 26.
'It is such an honor to follow the legendary voices of Wendell Broyles and Lou Gellermann behind the mike at Husky Stadium,' said Radovich, who has served as the back-up public address announcer for the Seattle Mariners since 1991. 'I look forward to being a part of the tradition, electricity and unique experience of Husky Football Saturdays for years to come.'
A former public relations staff member for the Mariners, Radovich served as the public relations director and vice president of Seafair from 1997-2004. In 2005, he began his current full-time position as president of BlueStar Management, Inc., a real estate development firm.
'When Lou announced his retirement as the longtime voice of the Huskies last fall, we knew there would be a significant amount of interest in the position,' said Leslie Wurzberger, UW's associate director of athletics for marketing. 'We were pleased with the quality of the applicant pool and each of the five finalists were really excellent. At the end of the day, Eric really confirmed that we are fortunate to have one of the top public address announcers in the country already and it was clear that he is committed to being a Husky.'
In addition to his public address duties over the last 18 years, Radovich has served as a play-by-play announcer for University of Washington baseball, Pacific Lutheran University football and Yakima Bears minor league baseball. He also appeared as the public address announcer for NBA Inside Drive, a Microsoft Xbox video game produced from 2002-04.
Last fall, Radovich served as the interim public address announcer for Husky football for the final five games of the season following Gellermann's retirement. Just two men, Wendell Broyles and Gellermann, have served Husky fans as the in-stadium voice of the Washington football program since 1949.
