Quarterbacks Shine in Second Spring Scrimmage
April 4, 2008
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State quarterbacks combined to complete 20-of-31 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns Friday, in the Cougars' second spring scrimmage at Martin Stadium.
Senior Gary Rogers threw for 129 yards on 11-of-17 passing, hitting senior wide receiver Brandon Gibson for a 10-yard score. Redshirt junior Kevin Lopina went 8-of-12 on the day, throwing a 10-yard touchdown to senior wide receiver Benny Ward. Lopina also added a rushing touchdown from seven yards out. Redshirt freshman Marshall Lobbestael completed his only pass of the day for four yards.
Each of the quarterbacks went the length of the scrimmage without throwing an interception.
'Our veterans on offense performed better than they have in previous scrimmages so that was encouraging,' WSU Head Coach Paul Wulff said. 'On defense we tackled fairly well, especially our starting unit.'
A total of 10 Cougars caught passes on the day, with sophomore Daniel Blackledge leading the way for the second straight scrimmage. Blackledge caught four passes for 70 yards, including catches of 26 and 30 yards. Gibson also hauled in four passes, totaling 37 yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Chris Ivory racked up 34 yards on a pass from Lopina, the longest play of the day for the Cougar offense.
Redshirt freshman Logwone Mitz led the Cougars' ground attack, racking up 35 yards on five carries.
'It was our best scrimmage of the spring,' Wulff said. 'Actually, I am really proud how the guys performed today. It was our fourth tough practice in five days. To look at it that way they came out and got a lot of work done.'
The Cougars' final scrimmage of the season takes place Saturday April 12 at Martin Stadium. The annual Spring Game is slated to kick off at 11 a.m.
