TUCSON, Ariz. - Charonda Williams won a pair of sprinting events and Brad Roth celebrated his birthday with big throw in the javelin to lead the Arizona State University track and field team in Tucson Saturday at the Jim Click Shootout hosted by Arizona. Overall, the Sun Devils collected 22 NCAA regional qualifiers while taking victory in seven events, six of which came on the women's side.
Williams recorded times of 11.55 in the 100m dash and 23.48 in the 200m dash to win both sprint events and write her name in the ASU record books as her times rank ninth and eighth, respectively, on the all-time Top 10 in school history. Williams also joined forces with Dominique' Maloy, Stephanie Garnett and Shauntel Elcock to run 45.04 and win the 4x100m relay.
The field events produced three more wins for the women as Sarah Stevens captured both the discus and the hammer throw. Stevens hit marks of 55.71m in the discus and 65.73m in the hammer while teammate Tai Battle took second in both events with tosses of 53.10m and 62.86m, respectively. Battle's hammer mark now stands as the third-best in school history.
Another No. 3 mark was recorded on the men's side as Roth threw the javelin 72.24m to move up two places on the all-time Top 10 list at ASU. His regional qualifying mark was one of nine recorded by the men on the day, including three more from Tomas Navarro, who had marks in the hammer, discus and shot put. The men's 4x400m relay again improved their time, lowering it to 3:07.63 as the team of Joel Phillip, Jimmie Gordon, Marquis Profit and Justin Kremer combined for the win.
Next up for the Sun Devils will be the 29th Sun Angel Track Classic presented by Coca-Cola, which will be held Friday and Saturday on Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe.
