PULLMAN, Wash. - UC Davis overcame a seven-run deficit and earned a four-game series split with a 13-11 win over Washington State in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Sunday.

There were 38 hits, seven walks, five hit batters, 24 men left on base, and 323 pitches in the game as UC Davis improved to 20-10 while Washington State dropped to 18-12.

'It's disappointing when you spot your starting pitcher seven runs and can't hold the lead,' Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'We seemed to stop playing after the first inning. You look at the scoreboard, see 11 runs and 17 hits, and think it's a lot, but it's not.'

The Cougars sent 11 men to the plate and scored seven runs in the first inning to chase Aggies' starter Jeff Reekers. Travis Coulter and Scott Suttmeier singled to open the frame and Paul Gran walked to load the bases. Jim Murphy followed with a grand slam on a 2-2 pitch to right field for his eight home run of the season and 27th of his career, tying Dale Ford (1964-66) for 10th on the Cougars' all-time list.

After Murphy's dinger, Jared Prince doubled off the wall in right center. After an Alex Burg ground out, Greg Lagreid was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and scored one out later when Shea Vucinich singled to make it 6-0. Coulter followed with a run-scoring double to cap the rally.

UC Davis rallied for four runs in the second and seven in the third to take an 11-7 lead. Kevin James hit a two-run home run and Jake Jefferies tripled in two in the second to cut the WSU's advantage to 7-4.

The Aggies loaded the bases with one out in the third and Matt Way (1-2) entered from the Cougar bullpen to take over for starter Chad Arnold. Way yielded hits to the first six hitters he faced allowing all three inherited runners to score and three more that were his responsibility.

The Cougars closed within 11-9 on a two-run single by Murphy in the bottom of the third. Murphy finished 4-for-5 with a career-high six RBI.

After UC Davis added a run in the sixth, WSU scored one in the seventh and one in the eighth to trim the UC Davis lead to 12-11. In the seventh, Prince collected a RBI-single, but the Cougars left the bases loaded when Garry Kuykendall struck out. In the eighth, Vucinich drove in a run with a ground out and moved the tying run to third with one out. However, Justin Fitzgerald retired Coulter on a comebacker and struck out Matt Fanelli to end the threat. Fitzgerald earned his sixth save of the season and made a winner out of Tom Briner (1-1).

Ty Kelly capped the scoring with a home run to right field leading off the ninth.
