April 8, 2008

STEVINSON, Calif. - The Washington State University men's golf team placed fourth and three Cougars finished in the top 25 at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational hosted by Colorado, Tuesday.

The Cougars put together three solid rounds of play (298-295-298) at the par-72, 7,144-yard Stevinson Ranch Golf Club and fired a total score of 891. WSU maintained its hold of fourth place throughout the entire tournament and the performance marks the fifth-consecutive top 10 finish for the men this season.

Sophomores Kevin Tucker and Austin Hurt led the Cougar contingent as both fired a 4-over par 220 to finish tied for 10th. Tucker earned his third top 10 finish of the season and the fourth of his career. Tucker needs one more top 10 to crack the WSU list for top 10 finishes in a season.

Hurt garnered his second consecutive top 10 finish of the season and the third of his career.

Freshman Nick Ellis also fared well throughout the tournament and carded an 8-over 224. Ellis moved up six places in the final round to finish in a tie for 16th. Ellis' performance places him in a tie for fifth on the list for top 25 finishes in a season (seven).

Senior Jordan Mason and sophomore Nick Grigsby both ended the day with a total score of 231 and round out the Cougar scorers. Junior Brandon Black, playing as an individual, also finished with 231.

The Cougars' steady play in the two-day tournament came in part from their dominance of the par 4s as they led the field in par-4 scoring (4.19, +29).

The men return to action when they head to Utah for the Cougar Classic, April 18-19, hosted by BYU.
