UCLA's Camuso, Arizona's Mowatt Named Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA freshman outfielder Samantha Camuso has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for April 1-7, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Camuso, a Redding, Calif. native, hit .462 (6-for-13) to extend her hitting streak to five games, as the No. 4/1 Bruins went 4-0 last week with wins over three ranked teams. UCLA has opened up Pac-10 play with seven straight wins, marking the first time since 1993 that the Bruins have begun conference action with a 7-0 record.

Camuso had a pair of two-hit games to give her 12 multiple-hit contests on the season. She leads the team with a .398 average, is tied for first with 11 doubles, second with 31 runs batted in and a .584 slugging percentage and tied for third with two home runs.

The freshman began the week with a 2-for-4 effort against No. 24/25 Washington, sparking a six-run fourth inning with a two-run single to put the Bruins ahead 2-0. After posting a single in victories over No. 7/7 Stanford on Friday and No. 21/23 California on Saturday, Camuso recorded another two-hit contest against the Golden Bears on Sunday.

UCLA (35-3) takes to the road this week as it will face No. 1/2 Arizona State on Fri., April 11 and No. 7/9 Arizona on Sat., April 12 and Sun., April 13.

This is the first Player of the Week honor for Camuso in her career. The accolade is the 105th for the UCLA softball team.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA senior Taryne Mowatt has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for April 1-7, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Mowatt allowed only one earned run in 17.1 innings pitched over a three game stretch last week, including a one-hitter against Oregon as Arizona went 2-1 against the Oregon schools.

Mowatt opened the week with a complete game shutout of Oregon State, striking out nine and allowing five hits in Arizona's 5-0 victory. The next day, as the Wildcats traveled down to Eugene, Mowatt struck out 12 batters and allowed only one run in another complete game effort leading the `Cats to a 6-1 win.

Although Arizona would drop its third game of the week, Mowatt was dominant in relief as she struck out six and walked none in 3.1 innings Sunday, keeping her team close in a game they would eventually lose, 3-2.

No. 7/9 Arizona has a busy week ahead as they host rival No. 1/2 Arizona State on Wed., April 9 before welcoming No. 23/23 Washington and #4/1 UCLA in over the weekend.

This is Mowatt's 8th career Pitcher of the Week honor and the 108th all-time for Arizona.
