Crews Prepare for Apple Cup Showdown

What's Happening This Week: The No. 15 WSU varsity eight will look to increase its winning streak to four straight Apple Cup titles this weekend against No. 17 Washington...WSU has only defeated the Huskies in the annual regatta four previous times in program history...three of those victories came under head coach Jane LaRiviere...dual regatta will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 12, on the Montlake Cut at Seattle.
The 2007 Apple Cup: The Cougars defeated the Huskies at Wawawai Landing with a time of 6:47.47...second varsity eight was also victories outstroking UW with a time of 6:58.65...varsity four narrowly lost, crossing the finish line just one second behind the Huskies.
WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere on the Huskies: 'They are obviously back in contention and doing really well. They proved themselves last weekend to be very tough and you can add to that that we will be competing on their home course. We're going to have to put a complete race together to challenge them.'
Last Week: Last week the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight squads competed at the San Diego Crew Classic...varsity eight took third place in the Jessop-Whittier Cup...second varsity eight took third in the Hungness Trophy Cup...novice eight won the Korholz Perpetual Trophy...crews also raced at the Husky Invitational, where the third varsity eight took first.

Pac-10 Highly Ranked: Six of the seven Pacific-10 teams are ranked in the CRCA/U.S. Rowing Varsity Eight Top-20 Poll...Oregon State is the only team not on the list.
Next Week: The Cougars will travel to Stanford for the Stanford Invitational April 19 and 20.
Coaching Staff: Jane LaRiviere enters her sixth year as the WSU head women's rowing coach...Cougars earned a program-best fourth place at the NCAA National Championships in 2006 under LaRiviere...she is joined by assistant Tara Medina, novice coach Christina Meyer and graduate assistant Paul Hawksworth...Medina is in her second year as an assistant...she joined WSU women's rowing after coaching one year at Michigan...Meyer is entering her third year as the novice coach...Hawksworth is a second-year graduate assistant.
