COUGARS HIT THE HIGHWAY FOR COMPETITIONS: The Washington State University track and field teams will compete at two different meets this weekend...Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite at UCLA's Drake Stadium will be held April 10-12...the 37th Annual Pelluer Invitational at Woodward Field on the campus of Eastern Washington University will take place April 11...Cougar decathletes Kyle Schauble and Trevor Habberstad, and heptathletes Angela Jensen and Jalissa Williams will be competing in the meet at UCLA April 10-11...results will be posted at, after competition concludes.

BOTH WASHINGTON STATE TRACK & FIELD TEAMS NATIONALLY RANKED, TWICE: The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) top 25 team polls are posted every Wednesday at the April 9 USTFCCCA poll, the Cougar men's team is ranked No. 20 and the WSU women's team is ranked No. 23...Track & Field News produces a formchart for NCAA Div. I Men's and Women's teams and a top 10 for each of April 8, the Washington State men's team is ranked tied for 16th while the WSU women's team is listed as tied for 22nd...individuals receiving top 10 recognition: Ebba Jungmark (1st, women's high jump), McKenzie Garberg (10th, women's discus), Jeshua Anderson (2nd, men's 400m hurdles), Matt Lamb (2nd, men's discus), and Rickey Moody (9th, men's decathlon).

ANDERSON NAMED PAC-10 MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF WEEK: WSU freshman Jeshua Anderson's 400m hurdles time of 49.68 seconds in winning the Texas Relays is the top collegiate time nationally, second-best in the US, and 10th-best in the world this year...Anderson (Woodland Hills, Calif.) took over Texas A&M's Nick Robinson's place as the national leader...Robinson finished second to Anderson in a time of 50.01 April 5 in Austin...Anderson's 49.68 time broke the 1989 freshman school record set by Cougar All-American and current hurdles coach, Mark Macdonald (51.20) as well as being the fourth-best intermediate hurdles time in WSU records...also reach NCAA RQ running anchor on 4x400m relay team (Barry Leavitt, Justin Woods, Reny Follett, Anderson) with a time of 3:09.85 at Texas Relays...ran anchor leg time of 46.3 seconds...2007 national prep 300m hurdles leader, now has the second-best time in the U.S., behind LaRon Bennett's 49.39...finished 14th in the 2008 NCAA Indoor 400m dash (47.69), played in 12 WSU 2007 football games (12 receptions, 372 yards, 2 TDs).

GARBERG GRABS HAMMER RECORD: McKenzie Garberg (senior, Benton City, Wash.) broke the WSU women's hammer record with an improved NCAA RQ toss of 196-3 (59.83m) at the Texas Relays...Garberg broke All-American Andrea Thornton's school hammer record of 195-0 (59.44), set in 2001...opened the outdoor season at Trojan Invite meet by throwing a trio of NCAA RQs - hammer (58.68m/192-6), discus (52.24m/171-5), and shot put (14.55m/47-9) Sac State Nike Invite, improved NCAA RQ mark in the discus with a winning throw and PR of 174-3 (53.11m)...this mark is fourth-best in school all-time records...Garberg was a 2007 All-American in the discus.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 35th season with the Cougar track program; 14th year as a head coach, 13th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...former WSU All-American heptathlete Diana Pickler is a volunteer assistant coach this season along with Bob Frey and Luan Weekes.

MOODY MOVES TO AUTOMATIC QUALIFIER: Rickey Moody (senior, Puyallup, Wash.) finished the Texas Relays decathlon with a PR and NCAA Automatic Qualifying total of 7,787 points, fourth place overall, third place among collegians...reached outdoor PRs in 7 of 10 events in addition to PRs in first day (4,156 points) and final point totals...during the competition, leaped an NCAA RQ long jump distance of 24-9 (7.54m)...his 7,787 points is the second-best decathlon mark in WSU history, behind Simon Shirley's 1988 total of 8,036 points for 15th place at the Seoul Olympics...this is the first NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark for Moody who participated in the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the long jump (22nd).

NCAA REGIONAL QUALIFYING: The goal for the WSU competitors in the outdoor season is to reach NCAA Regional Qualifying marks...the top-five individual finishers from each regional event automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, June 11-14 in Des Moines...the only events that still have national provisional and automatic national qualifying marks are the heptathlon and decathlon, and the 10,000m races

NO QUALIFYING MARKS NEEDED FOR PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Pacific-10 Conference foregoes its own set of qualifying marks for its championship meet...a maximum of 24 women and 24 men may be entered from each school at the head coach's discretion...outdoor and indoor seasons will be used for descending order lists and seeding into the championship heats/flights...the Pac-10's performance descending order lists can be viewed online at on Performance Lists and under Current Seasons, click again on Pac-10 Outdoor Track & Field Performance Lists.

AIR ARRIVEY SOARS TO SEVEN-FEET (again): After clearing a PR height in the high jump of 7-1 1/2 (2.17m) during the 2008 indoor season, sophomore Trent Arrivey (Woodinville, Wash.) soared to an NCAA RQ height of 7-0 1/2 (2.15m) at the Stanford Invite (4/5)...Arrivey became the 28th Cougar man to clear seven-feet and has cleared 7-0 three times this year in competition...he participated at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships but did not clear a bar.

STEEPLECHASE NO BARRIER(S) FOR COUGARS: Three Cougs reached NCAA RQ marks in the 3000m steeplechase at the Stanford Invite...Sam Ahlbeck (redshirt sophomore, Renton, Wash.) ran a PR time of 9:04.83...Meghan Leonard (senior, Newberg, Ore.) clocked in with a time of 10:22.35, second-fastest time in WSU women's steeple another section race the following day, Collier Lawrence (senior, Reno, Nev.) ran a PR time of 10:25.27, third-fastest women's steeple in school history.

SPEARING BIG NUMBERS: Jon Jeffreys (senior, Spokane Valley, Wash.) and Marissa Tschida (freshman, Missoula, Mont.) threw javelin PRs at the Texas Relays...Jeffreys hauled out a 229-10 (70.05m) and Tschida improved her collegiate PR and school freshman record to 159-3 (48.55m).

HURDLING INTO WSU INTERMEDIATE RECORDS: Lorraine King (junior, Fontana, Calif.) took third place in the 400m hurdles final at the Texas Relays with an improved NCAA RQ and lifetime-best time of 58.39 seconds...third-fastest women's intermediate hurdles time in school history and an improvement of 2 seconds for King...she ran a prelim time of 1:00.09 and previous PR was 1:00.28.

LONG & MIDDLE DISTANCE RUNNERS MAKE NOISE: Lisa Egami (sophomore, Coquitlam, B.C.) and Isley Gonzalez (senior, Sunnyside, Wash.) reached NCAA RQs with their PR times at the Stanford Invite...Egami finished second in the 1500m with a time of 4:27.45, 10th-fastest in school history...Gonzalez ran a 5k time of 16:42.91, a PR by over a minute and the sixth-fastest time in school history...MEN SLICE TIMES: A trio of Cougar dropped significant seconds off their PR times in the 5k...Dominic Smargiassi (14:19.39), Chris Williams (14:23.97) and Dan Geib (14:24.27) all ran bests at the Stanford Invite.

MORE, MORE, MORE MORENO: Junior Moreno Zapata (Lakewood, Wash.) won the men's triple jump at the Stanford Invite with a NCAA RQ leap of 49-5 3/4 (15.08m)...he reached the winning triple jump on his sixth and final attempt, after fouling the previous three attempts and won the competition by 3/4 inch.

FLIRTING WITH THE 200 MARK: Junior Phil MacArthur (Selkirk, Wash.) threw the hammer a PR distance of 199-feet (60.65m) at the Texas Relays...MacArthur improved his NCAA RQ with the toss and can move into the distinguished Cougar top ten list with another eight feet added to the throw.

M-I-A: Two-time All-American discus thrower Matt Lamb (junior, Emmett, Idaho) is coming back from a bout of back spasms suffered last summer at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento...Lamb has resumed practicing throwing the discus this week but will be evaluated for competition on a weekly basis.

JUNGMARK WINS NCAA INDOOR HIGH JUMP TITLE: WSU freshman Ebba Jungmark won the women's high jump at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships...the Onsala, Sweden, native's winning height was 6-2 1/4 (1.89m)...she received All-America honors with the win...her mark is the second-best women's high jump in WSU history...Jungmark is not expected to compete until later in the outdoor season.
