Battle of Top-Ranked Teams Goes to Arizona State

April 11, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Anjelica Selden struck out five in a complete-game four hitter, but Arizona State scored single runs in the first, fourth and sixth, all with two outs, to get past UCLA 3-0 on Friday at Farrington Stadium. The Bruins entered this week as the top-ranked team in the Softball poll, while the Sun Devils are the #1 squad in the USA Today/NFCA rankings.

The Bruins fall for the first time in Pac-10 play, moving to 7-1 in conference and 35-4 overall. The Sun Devils improve to 43-2 and 7-0 in league action.

Freshman Katie Schroeder singled to lead off the game, but ASU pitcher Katie Burkhart retired the next 18 in a row before allowing back-to-back singles by senior Krista Colburn and junior Amanda Kamekona to begin the top of the seventh. Selden gave up four hits, three runs and one walk in six innings.

The Sun Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Kaitlin Cochran led off with a single to left, and one out later, moved into scoring position on a groundout by Jackie Vasquez. Krista Donnenwirth then blooped a single into right-center to score Cochran and put ASU on top.

In the fourth, Arizona State added another run on one swing of the bat. With two outs, Lesley Rogers roped her first career home run to right to make it 2-0.

Arizona State upped its lead to 3-0 in the sixth. Cochran walked to lead off, but Selden struck out Rhiannon Baca and forced Cochran at second on a fielder's choice groundout off the bat of Vasquez for the second out. However, Donnenwirth laced a double down the left-field line to plate Vasquez for the Sun Devils' third run.

Burkhart fanned nine for Arizona State, while Donnenwirth had two of the Sun Devils' four hits.

The top-ranked Bruins move on to Tucson to visit two-time defending national champion Arizona on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's 3 p.m. game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net West (in Southern California). Sunday's 12 p.m. game, as well all UCLA softball contests, will feature Gametracker on
