Cal Men's Golf in 12th Place in Tight Field After Day One
April 11, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. - The California men's golf team holds 12th place after the first round of action on Friday in a tightly-bunched field at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Karsten Golf Course. The second round tees off at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with the event wrapping up on Sunday.
Junior George Gandranata tallied an opening round 73 (+2) with three birdies to tie for 33rd place, leading the Golden Bears. Cal's 295 is just 10 strokes out of fourth-place overall in the event. Arizona State's A and B teams were both red-hot on their home course, firing 279's (-5) to tie for the overall lead. Colorado State is in third place at 280 (-4) while Denver (285, +1) and Texas A&M (287, +3) round out the top five.
'We didn't do a lot of things right, we didn't hit it well, we didn't chip well and we didn't putt well,' Cal coach Steve Desimone said. 'But I was proud of the way they hung in there after a slow start. We didn't make a lot of putts and we didn't get many birdies; and then we finished six-over on the 18th hole and that really torpedoed us. There are three or four very difficult holes and they catch up to you if you don't make birdies early. No question that slowed us down.'
After Gandranata's solid plus-two round, the Bears had three players match each other with 74's. Freshmen Stephen Hale and Eric Mina and senior Brandon Beck each finished at three-over-par on the par-71, 7,057-yard course. Hale and Beck both matched Gandranata with three birdies in the opening round.
'We have 36 holes left,' Desimone said. 'It's similar to what we've done this spring with the slow start. We need to pick up the pace in the second and third rounds. We did not finish well in terms of placement, but if we hit some good shots and make some putts, we'll be fine. The guys are ready to get back out there and compete.'
Sophomore Evan Derian rounded out the rotation for the Bears, registering a 76 (+5).
