Conley Homers Twice More In 12-4 Win
April 11, 2008
SEATTLE - Kyle Conley hit two home runs and Cam Nobles allowed two runs over six innings as the Washington baseball team beat Brigham Young, 12-4, Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the second game of a three-game, non-conference series.
The win was the 15th in a row against non-conference opponents for the Huskies, who improved to 23-9 on the season. BYU fell to 14-20.
Nobles (3-1), a sophomore from Mill Creek, gave up four hits and struck out six in his six innings for the win. BYU starter Jake Wortham (2-2) took the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) on 10 hits over five and two-thirds. Husky junior Tyler Cheney threw the final three innings for his first save of the year.
Conley, who hit game-winning homers Tuesday and Thursday, continued his hot hitting when he lifted a two-out solo home run in the third inning, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The homer was his third in as many games and his seventh of the season. After the homer, the next three UW hitters singled, the last of which, a hard grounder through the left side from freshman Sean Meehan, drove in a run, making it 2-0.
But, BYU answered back, tying the game with two runs in the top of the fourth. After two walks, Jonathan Cluff reached on an infield single to load the bases with two outs. Designated hitter Bryce Ayoso laced a single to left, sending in a pair to tie the score at 2-2.
Washington went back on top in the bottom of the fifth. After Conley singled and Ty Rasmussen reached on an error, Aaron Russell dumped a single over shortstop to plate Conley. Meehan followed with a single to send in Rasmussen, putting the Huskies in front, 4-2.
In the sixth, with a runner at second and two outs, BYU intentionally walked Conley and Rasmussen followed by drilling a 3-0 pitch for a double off the wall in left, scoring a fifth Husky run. After a pitching change, Troy Scott reached on an error, allowing Conley to come across, making it a 6-2 UW advantage.
BYU struck for two runs in the eighth when shortstop Dan Vargas belted a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, cutting the Husky lead to 6-4.
Conley, who went 3-for-4 with four runs and three RBI, hit his second homer in the bottom of the eighth, his eighth of the season and fourth this week. Later in the eighth, Andy Lentz drove in a ninth Husky run with a single and freshman Julien Pollard drove in three with a pinch-hit triple to put the game out of reach.
Meehan, a freshman from Centralia, went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for Washington. Russell was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The Huskies close out the series vs. the Cougars Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. game. The Huskies, who will have played 22 of 25 at home after tomorrow's game, hit the road Monday and Tuesday for a two-game, non-conference series at Gonzaga.
