Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. - Second-ranked Arizona State scored nine runs in the fourth inning and cruised to a 15-3 victory over Washington State in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday.

The Sun Devils (29-3, 5-2 Pac-10) pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of four Washington State (18-14, 2-5 Pac-10) errors to tally 10 unearned runs.

'You can't walk guys and give up cheap runs,' Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'We gave up 10 unearned runs. I've never seen anything like it and I'm disappointed because our defense has been our forte.'

Arizona State led 1-0 after scoring a run in the opening frame, then scored nine runs, eight unearned, off Cougar starter Ross Humes (2-2). With runners at first and third and one out, Marcel Champagnie hit a potential inning-ending double play ground ball to second baseman Michael Weber. However, Weber and shortstop Shea Vucinich muffed the exchange at second allowing a run to score and putting runners at first and second.

Following a double steal, Ryan Sontag recorded a RBI-ground out to make it 3-0. After a walk, Weber booted a ground ball to allow another run to score. Jason Kipnis and Ike Davis added two-runs singles and Kiel Roling capped the rally with a two-run home run.

The Cougars scored a run in the fourth on a Scott Suttmeier double and two in the seventh on a RBI-triple by Paul Gran and a balk.

Josh Satow (4-1) went six innings for the victory on the mound and Dustin Brader blanked Washington State over the final three innings for his first save.

The teams continue their series Saturday at 2 p.m.
