Cougars Defeat Huskies at Seattle

April 12, 2008

SEATTLE - The Washington State University rowing team has given its mothers something to celebrate this WSU Mom's Weekend with a victory against Pacific-10 rivals, Washington. The No. 8 Cougars outstroked the No. 4 Huskies Saturday, April 12, at Seattle, marking the third straight year WSU has won the bragging rights for the cross-state dual regatta. The WSU varsity eight completed the 2,000 meter course at the Montlake Cut with a time of 6:16.41, five seconds ahead of Washington.

Saturday's regatta marked the second race of the Cougar's 2008 spring season. The last time the Huskies and Cougars met was April 6, at the San Diego Crew Classic where WSU placed third, just four seconds behind first place Washington.

The second varsity eight finished second in its race against the Huskies, crossing the finish line with a time of 6:30.07, a mere four seconds behind Washington's boat.

The WSU novice eight team that took home the Korholz Perpetual Trophy at the San Diego Crew Classic crossed the finish line seven seconds behind Washington's novice eight boat Saturday with a time of 7:06.15.

Washington also took races in the varsity four, third varsity eight and second novice eight match-ups.

'The varsity eight had a great race today,' head coach Jane LaRiviere said. 'They made some good changes in practice this week and it was nice to see them execute their plan. We have to keep getting a little better each time out. The second varsity eight and varsity four did not get the win today, but they made some good progress.'

The men of WSU and UW also faced off today at the Montlake Cut. Washington swept Washington State in all four races.
