No. 1 Cal Varsity 8 Tops Texas
April 12, 2008
AUSTIN, Texas - California won all three varsity races as well as the novice eight race in its dual with Texas on Saturday at Lady Bird Lake. The Golden Bears, making their first trip to the Lone Star State, claimed the varsity eight race, as the top-ranked Bears' boat rowed to a time of 6:20.2 to the Longhorns' 6:38.2.
Overall, Cal won four of the five races against Texas, with the Longhorns' only win coming in a second/third novice eight event, 7:15.3-7:25.0.
Cal's unbeaten varsity eight has now won races against four teams - Texas, Virginia, Ohio State and Notre Dame - that are likely to be racing at the NCAA Championships. The Texas varsity eight was unbeaten before today, with wins over Central Florida, Iowa and then-No. 19 Wisconsin, among others.
'We figured this was going to be a real test for us,' Cal head coach Dave O'Neill said. 'Texas has had some good results, and it's always a concern when we travel to an unknown race course. All crews raced hard, and we're happy with the results. There is room for improvement as we head into the Pac-10 portion of the schedule.'
The Bears' varsity four won the day's first race, with a time of 7:25.2 to Texas' 7:52.8. Next up, Cal's novice eight beat Texas, 6:49.1-6:53.9, in what was a close contest. The Bears did not establish a clear lead until past the halfway point of the race.
In the second varsity eight race, Cal triumphed, 6:33.5-6:51.9.
Cal takes a week off before hosting Washington at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, in Redwood Shores, Calif.
