April 13, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. - Washington pitcher Aleah Macon threw a complete-game shutout to hand top-ranked ArizonaState its first Pac-10 loss of the season, as the 23rd-ranked Huskies picked up a 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Farrington Stadium.

One day after lasting just two-thirds of an inning against the Sun Devils, Macon came back to strike out nine while allowing seven hits and three walks to improve to 14-6 on the season.

The Huskies (25-14-1, 4-5 Pac-10) scored a pair of runs with two outs in the first inning for a quick 2-0 lead. Washington strung together three straight hits off of ASU All-America pitcher Katie Burkhart in the inning, with Morgan Stuart delivering a two-RBI single.

With two outs, Ashlyn Watson singled to the shortstop and Alicia Blake followed with a double to right centerfield to put runners on second an third. Stuart then brought both players home with a single to left field.

The Huskies tacked on one more run in the sixth inning on a run-scoring fielders choice by Bailey Stenson that scored pinch-runner Dru Hester from third base.

Watson went 2-for-4 in the game, while Blake finished 2-for-3. Stuart's two RBI gives her a team-leading 35 on the season.

Both Burkhart and the Sun Devils (44-3, 8-1 Pac-10) suffered just their third loss of the year. Burkhart (25-3) gave up six hits and three earned runs in a complete-game effort. She struck out 11 and walked none.

Washington returns home to host UCLA next weekend. The two teams play on Friday at 3:00 p.m., and at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Notes: The Huskies lead the all-time series 43-15 ... The win was the second time this season the Huskies have defeated the nation's No. 1 team. Washington defeated then-No. 1 Alabama, 6-3, on March 1 in Seattle ... The Huskies are now 6-8 against teams ranked in the Top 25, and 2-2 against teams ranked No. 1.
