Zags Hand Huskies 15-3 Loss
April 14, 2008
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga scored multiple runs in each of the first five innings and rolled to a 15-3 win over the Washington baseball team Monday night in a non-conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex.
Husky freshman starter Geoff Brown (2-1) suffered the loss for the Huskies, allowing seven runs on eight hits over two and one-third innings. Gonzaga's Reedy Berg went six innings for the win, giving up three runs on seven hits.
Jason Chatwood had three hits and four RBI to lead the Zags as both teams emptied their benches. Husky DH Ty Rasmussen went 3-for-4.
UW left fielder Kyle Conley gave the Huskies the early lead when he belted a long home run to left-center field with Bradley Boyer aboard in the first, giving the UW a 2-0 lead. It was Conley's ninth homer of the season and fifth in the last five games.
But, the Zags (19-16) struck back with two of their own in the bottom of the first. With runners at first and third, Ryan Wiegand singled to right to score one and, later, Mark Castellitto's deep flyout to center scored another, tying the score at 2-2.
The Bulldogs bats remained hot in the second. After Bryan Winston singled and moved to second on a groundout, Evan Wells singled to drive him in. Wells stole second and, after a second out, scored on a double from Marcus McKimmy. After a walk, the Huskies appeared to be out of the inning when Tyson Van Winkle popped up on the infield, but the ball dropped between two UW fielders and fell in for an RBI single. The inning ended when Wiegand, rounding third to score on a single, slipped and was tagged for the third out.
In the third, Brown walked the first three batters to begin the inning and a run scored on a Wells groundout. After Josh Scofield came on in relief, the Zags made it 7-2 on an RBI single from Jason Chatwood.
Gonzaga erased any doubt with a five-run fourth inning that was highlighted by a two-run homer from Castellitto before adding three more in the fifth, helped along by two UW errors.
The only other for the UW (23-11) came in the sixth when freshman Julien Pollard drove in one with a pinch-hit double.
The Huskies and Bulldogs play again Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Washington returns to Pac-10 play this Friday through Sunday with a three-game series at California in Berkeley.
