Cardinal To Finish Out Regular Season At California On Saturday
April 15, 2008
STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 24 Stanford men's tennis team will finish up the 2008 regular season and conference schedule this Saturday at 1 p.m. when they take on No. 29 California in Berkeley. The Cardinal and the Golden Bears will be duking it out for third place in the Pac-10 behind No. 5 UCLA and No. 4 USC.
Stanford beat Cal, 5-2, earlier in the year in the 'Big Smash' at the Taube Tennis Center and has seen them as opponents in various tournaments. The Cardinal has fared well against their cross-bay rivals, having the advantage over the Golden Bears 7-4 in singles play, and 6-3 in doubles matches.
Stanford moved up four places to No. 24 in the rankings today, while Cal also slid upwards, going from No. 36 to No. 29. The Cardinal still boast three ranked singles players, with freshman Alex Clayton falling to No. 6, junior Matt Bruch being re-ranked at No. 76 and sophomore Richard Wire rising eight places to No. 88. Cal's only features one ranked player, No. 107 Kallim Stewart, who has played a majority of his singles matches at the top spot for the Golden Bears.
With both Cal and Stanford winning both of their matches last weekend, a victory for either team on Saturday will be the fifth Pac-10 victory of the season and will lock up third place in the conference heading into Pac-10 Championships at Ojai, Calif. beginning on April 24.
