April 15, 2008

SEATTLE - Gonzaga completed a two-game, non-conference sweep of the Washington baseball team, beating the Huskies, 8-4, Tuesday at Patterson Baseball Complex.

Washington ace Nick Haughian, who had allowed only one run and struck out 29 in his last 17 innings of work, suffered the loss to fall to 4-3 on the season. In his three innings, he gave up three runs on six hits. GU sophomore starter Jeremy Stumetz (3-0) threw six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, for the win.

The Huskies (23-12) lost their third in a row for the first time this year while the Bulldogs improved to 20-16 on the season.

For the second straight game, the Huskies scored two runs in the first. Catcher Brett Wilcox got the UW started with a solo homer to left, his third of the season. After a second out, Troy Scott, Ty Rasmussen and Brian Pearl reached on singles, with Pearl's driving in Scott to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the first, the Zags took advantage of a leadoff walk as Evan Wells drew a free pass and eventually scored on a single from first baseman Ryan Wiegand, cutting the Huskies lead to 2-1. Gonzaga tied the score with a run in the second as Wells grounded out with the bases loaded to drive one in.

In the third, the Bulldogs added another to go in front as Marcus McKimmy walked and eventually scored on a single from Tyson Van Winkle.

In the fourth, with Elliott Cribby on in place of Haughian, Gonzaga broke through with a pair of two-run homers from Ryan Wiegand and Mark Castellitto, making it a 7-2 lead.

Washington got one back in the sixth when Bradley Boyer singled to drive in a run. In the seventh, Andy Lentz's third hit of the game drove in a fourth run for Washington.

The Huskies return to Pac-10 play this weekend when they travel to Berkeley for a three-game series at No. 8 California. Friday's game begins at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Both Saturday and Sunday's game will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
