Selden Pitches UCLA to 2-1 Win Over UW
April 18, 2008
SEATTLE - UCLA pitcher Anjelica Selden struck out 14 to lead the fifth-ranked Bruins past No. 22 Washington, 2-1, on Friday afternoon in a Pac-10 Conference game at Husky Softball Stadium.
UCLA (36-6, 9-2 Pac-10) got on the scoreboard first on an RBI-single by GiOnna DiSalvatore in the third inning. The Bruins had four hits in the inning and had the bases loaded with only one out, but UW starter Aleah Macon got back-to-back outs to get out of the jam.
The Bruins added what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Amanda Kamekona.
Washington (25-15-1, 4-6 Pac-10) scored its run in the bottom of the fifth on a UCLA throwing error. Dani Stuart reached base to lead off the inning after getting hit by a pitch from Selden. After Jessica Ventoza came on to pinch-run for Stuart, Alyson McWherter laid down a sacrifice bunt and DiSalvatore, the first baseman, threw wildly to second base in an attempt to get Ventoza. The ball rolled out to the centerfield fence, allowing Ventoza to come around and score.
Macon dropped to 14-8 after giving up 10 hits, two earned runs and three walks in a complete-game effort. She struck out six.
Selden walked just one in a going the distance, and improved to 19-3 with the win. Krista Colburn led the Bruins at the plate, going 3-for-4, while DiSalvatore was 2-for-4.
Washington and UCLA conclude their two-game series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
