April 19, 2008

PROVO, Utah - Led by dominant performances from freshman Nick Ellis and sophomore Austin Hurt, the Washington State University men's golf team finished tied for second at the Ping Cougar Classic, Saturday.

The Cougars carded a three-round total of 858 (-6) and tied with host school Brigham Young at the par-72, 7,001-yard Riverside Country Club. WSU was one of only four schools in the 14-team field to finish under par. The Cougars shot 285-285-288 and their final round score tied for the lowest total of the day.

'Our guys played great today just like I felt they would,' Head Coach Walt Williams said. 'We had an awesome finish and this gives us some momentum heading into the Pacific-10 Conference Championships next week.'

Ellis shot a 74 in the final round and tied for second with Hurt, who shot even par in the final day. Ellis and Hurt both ended the tournament at 6-under par and with total scores of 210.

Ellis earned his fifth top 10 and eighth top 25 finish of the season. His performance moves him into a tie for third on the top 10 finishes in a season list and into a tie for fourth on the list for top 25 finishes in a season.

Hurt notched his 10th career top 25 finish and cracked the all-time list at WSU (T10th).

Sophomore Nick Grigsby inked a 222 and Kevin Tucker finished close behind with 223 to round out the Cougar contingent.

'Xavier came through with a great round and Kevin being well today helped a ton,' Williams said.
