Neuman Leads CU's 5k Racers At Mt. Sac
WALNUT, Calif. - University of Colorado junior Kenyon Neuman took first place in the 5,000-meter run on Friday night at the Mt. Sac Relays.
Neuman completed the race in 13 minutes and 49.31 seconds. It was the first time Neuman broke the 14 minute mark in the event.
"It was good race," Neuman said. "The conditions were good. (Matt) Tebo and Richard (Medina) helped take the lead for awhile so I wasn't leading the entire way. I think I made my move with about three laps to go in the race."
Freshman Richard Medina crossed the finish just two seconds after Neuman to place second overall. He finished in 13:51.58. Matt Tebo, another freshman, placed seventh with a mark of 13:56.20. It was the outdoor 5k debut for both Medina and Tebo.
All three (Neuman, Medina and Tebo) marks were fast enough to qualify for regionals (14:12.00).
Bradley Harkrader also ran in the men's 5k and placed 20th overall. He finished with a mark of 14:16.50.
On the women's side, Laura Thweatt had a nice race in the 5,000-meters. She crossed the finish in 16:52.63, just .63 seconds off the regional qualifying time. It was a personal best for Thweatt.
"We had some good races here tonight from Richard, Kenyon and Matt," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "Laura Thweatt had a good race, although one second slower than we needed for regionals and Morgan Ekemo, who ran unattached, had a very good race and we are looking forward to putting her in a CU uniform in the near future.
"Overall all it was a pretty good day. We had several regional qualifiers and personal bests. It was another successful trip to Mt. Sac."
