Bears Compete at Woody Wilson Open
April 19, 2008
The California track and field team earned four NCAA regional-qualifying scores and won five events at the Woody Wilson Open Saturday on the campus of UC Davis. The Golden Bears took top honors in men's and women's pole vault, women's triple jump, men's shot put and women's high jump.
Sophomore Kristen Meister, an All-American transfer from Davidson, won high jump with a regional-qualifying mark of 5-8.75 (1.75m) The mark ties her for ninth in the event all-time in school history.
Cal took the top three spots in the women's pole vault. Junior Katie Morgan claimed first with her mark of 13-1.50 (4.00m). Though the mark was a regional qualifier, it did not match her career best of 13-5.75, which she set at last weekend's Big Meet. Following Morgan were freshmen Allison Stokke and Veronica Stimson at 11-11.75 (3.65m).
Junior Artensia Young won triple jump with a regional-qualifying mark of 40-5.00 (12.32m). She had already notched a regional-qualifying mark of 40-5.50 at the Texas Relays two weeks ago.
Senior Donny Appanaitis recorded a regional-qualifying and personal-best mark of 16-6.75 (5.05m) to take first in the pole vault. Sophomore Ryan Shuler followed Appanaitis in second at 16-0.75(4.90m). Redshirt freshman Patrick Kowalsky won shot put with a 53-11.25 (16.44m).
Cal will host the Brutus Hamilton Invitational next weekend from April 25-26 at Edwards Stadium. It will be the final home meet of the season for the Bears.
