Trojans Show Signs Of Returning To Health At Long Beach Invitational

Sophomore Ekene Anene had the top collegiate women's triple jump and junior Aven Wright won the men's triple jump competition at the Long Beach Invitational held at Cerritos College today (April 19) to highlight the Trojan efforts on the day.
Anene had a wind-aided jump of 40-3 1/4 (12.27m) to post the top leap by a collegiate athlete on the day and second overall. Wright won the men's TJ with a season-best leap of 48-2 3/4 (14.70m).
The Trojan hurdlers also had a strong day at the Long Beach Invitational. Senior Kai Kelley had the top collegiate time and finished second overall with a wind-aided time of 13.64. Freshman Oscar Spurlock finished third among college hurdlers (6th overall) with a time of 14.16 while sophomore Sean Adams placed 15th among collegians (10th overall) with a time of 14.91.
Sophomore Nia Ali ran her first 100m HH race as a Trojan and had a 13.73 to win her heat and finish tops among collegiate women and second overall.
Sophomore Katherine Ellis led four Trojan runners in the women's 1500m race, finishing 20th with a time of 4:45.33. Also running for USC were sophomore Jennifer Wells who placed 30th with a time of 4:51.05, sophomore Jasmine Leija who finished 33rd with a PR of 4:52.94 and sophomore Chanel Fischetti who took 35th with a time of 4:53.33.
In the men's 1500m race, sophomore Ryan Philyaw led the way with a time of 3:59.15 to finish 18th. Also runner in the event for USC were freshman John Carley (33rd - with a season-best 4:06.89), redshirt sophomore Gerad Herkey (41st - 4:14.07), freshman James Komen (44th - 4:16.81) and redshirt freshman Blake Adams (48th - 4:27.78).
In the women's 5000m race sophomore Bridget Helgerson was second with a PR of 17:55.63, while redshirt junior Christine Greer was third with a PR of 17:56.72. Both athletes bettered their previous best by approximately 30 seconds.
Freshman Sarah Cocco ran her first 800m race as a Trojan and placed fifth (4th among college runners) with a time of 2:13.87.
Junior Desmond Hamilton showed signs of returning to health with wind-aided times of 10.82 in the 100m and 21.82 in the 200m dashes.
Freshman Terry Prentice was in action, placing 10th among collegians in the long jump with a mark of 22-1 3/4 (6.75m) and he also ran a wind-aided 11.30 100m dash.
Senior John Peate had a strong showing in his first steeplechase of the season, placing sixth with a time of 9:31.90. Peate had the 10th fastest 3000m SC ever by a Trojan of 9:20.79 at the 2007 USC-UCLA Dual Meet.
Redshirt junior Mike Curiel placed ninth in the men's hammer (4th among college throwers) with a new PR of 193-3 (58.91m).
Arielle Sepulveda placed 24th in the women's javelin with a season-best throw of 97-10.
