Barte Earns Second Pac-10 Player Of The Week Award In A Month
April 21, 2008
STANFORD, Calif.- Freshman Hilary Barte has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week for Apr. 14-20, picking up her second career honor in a week that Stanford extended its winning streak to seven matches and earned a share of its 21st consecutive conference title.
Barte, ranked No. 7 in the country, won both of her matches last week and improved to 25-5 overall and a team-best 20-3 in dual match play.
Against UC Davis on Apr. 15, she routed Robin Guier 6-0, 6-2 as Stanford cruised to its third straight shutout. Stanford's string of three consecutive 7-0 shutouts represented the first such stretch since the club blanked UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State by identical 7-0 margins back in April 2004.
Later in the week against No. 6 California, she dispatched of California's Marina Cossou 6-1, 6-3 in a battle of top-10 players. Barte's victory over Cossou, who entered the match ranked sixth nationally, kept an impressive winning streak in tact for the rookie.
Barte has not lost a match in two months (Feb. 20 at California), winning 17 in a row at the No. 1 spot while dropping only three sets during that stretch. She is 14-1 against Pac-10 opponents, 17-3 against nationally-ranked foes and 17-1 in home matches.
Barte was also named Pac-10 Player of the Week for Mar. 31-Apr. 6 after guiding Stanford to a key home sweep of No. 8 USC and No. 9 UCLA.
Stanford travels to Ojai, Calif., next weekend for the Pac-10 Championships. NCAA Tournament first and second round competition is scheduled for May 9-10 at select campus sites. The final 16 teams advance to Tulsa, Okla., the following week for the NCAA Championships.
