Chappell Named to Palmer Cup Team
April 21, 2008
UCLA senior Kevin Chappell, the fourth-ranked college player in the country, has been named to the 2008 Palmer Cup Team, the Golf Coaches Assn. of America announced Monday.
The Palmer Cup presented by Monster is a Ryder Cup style competition between American and European college-aged amateurs that will be played June 26-27 at Glasgow Golf Club Gailes Links in Scotland's capital of Glasgow. The U.S. leads the series, 6-4-1 and won last year's event at Caves Valley. Europe has won the last two events on its home soil.
A two-time All-American, Chappell has won four collegiate tournaments in his UCLA career and currently leads the Bruins with 71.0 scoring average and six Top 10 finishes. In November, he won four singles matches in leading the Bruins to the Collegiate Match Play Championship. Last summer he participated in the U.S.-Japan Matches. In the summer of 2006 he tied for fifth at the British Amateur at Royal St. George's.
Joining Chappell will be Louisville's Derek Fathauer, Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler, Aaron Goldberg of San Diego State, Georgia Tech's Chesson Hadley, Florida's Billy Horschel, Adam Mitchell of Georgia and Michael Thompson of Alabama. Stanford's Conrad Ray will serve as the U.S. Team's coach.
