2008 Pac-10 Championships, Day Two
April 22, 2008
PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - Sophomore Belen Mozo shot an even-par 71 for the second consecutive day as USC surged ahead of UCLA by nine strokes heading into the final round of the 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Women's Golf Championship at Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Mozo is tied with defending champion Tiffany Joh of the Bruins, who shot a 2-over 73, for the individual lead after notching birdies on Nos. 7, 8, 11 and 14.
'She's such a strong player,' USC Coach Andrea Gaston said. 'She had a lot of great opportunities today.'
Scores like Mozo's were the exception Tuesday as a strong offshore breeze was especially evident on the back nine, Only Arizona State sophomore Anna Nordqvist and Oregon sophomore Kate Hildahl came in under par, each with 1-under 70s.
'It got windy sooner [that expected],' Gaston said. 'I noticed we really had to make some great up-and-downs to save some pars.'
Similar conditions are expected Wednesday, something that the Trojans (285-292) will take into account more than the distance between themselves and cross-town rival UCLA (284-302).
'You can't go out there protecting a lead. Play the golf course, play the conditions and pay attention to the hole locations,' Gaston said.
Arizona State (296-294) remains in third place at 22-over, while Arizona (301-299) and Oregon (298-302) are tied for fourth.
Eight golfers are within four shots of the conference championship, including four from USC. Nordqvist, teammate Azahara Munoz and Hildahl are also in the mix, but it will be singing sensations Mozo and Joh in the final pairing.
'They were karaoke stars last night,' Gaston said. 'They'll put their game faces on but will have a good time out there.'
Final round tee times being at 8 a.m. PDT, with the announcement of the All-Pac-10 Team, 2008 Pac-10 Golfer of the Year, the Newcomer/Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year following the conclusion of play.
