Stanford Track And Field Set For a Big Weekend

April 22, 2008

Stanford, Calif.- Stanford will travel across the bay this weekend to Berkeley to compete in the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. The meet will take place Fri.-Sat. Apr. 25-26 at Edwards Stadium on the campus of the University of California.

Stanford has already established 42 regional qualifying standards so far this season. The men have 22 of the standards, while the women have 20.

The Cardinal have several athletes ranked No.1 in the Pac-10 in their events. The men are led by Hari Mix who has the Pac-10's top time in both the 5,000 meters (13:56.28) and the 10,000 meters (28:50.87). Also with Pac-10's top marks are Garrett Heath in the 1,500 meters (3:40.51) and Graeme Hoste in the pole vault (18-4 ¾). The women are led by Erica McLain who has the top mark in the triple jump (46-7) and is tied for the top mark in the long jump (21-3 ¾). Also with a Pac-10 top mark is Lauren Centrowitz in the 1,500 meters (4:18.63)

In addition to the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, Stanford will send eight athletes to the Penn Relays to compete in the men's and women's distance medley relays. The Stanford teams will be made up of several All-Americans who will look to come back with the prestigious DMR titles at the Penn Relays.

The men's team will be made up of Garrett Heath (1200M), Andrew Dargie (400M), Michael Garcia (800M), and Russell Brown (1600M). Heath, Garcia, and Brown were members of the national champion team in the DMR at the Indoor NCAA Championships in 2007. In the event the Cardinal will face Texas who was the 2008 NCAA Indoor Champion. The longhorns also set the World Record in the event earlier this season indoors. However, Brown and Garcia did not have eligibility indoors this season making their return to the event set up what should be fast competitive race.

The women's team will be made up of Alicia Follmar (1200M), Idara Otu (400M), Madeline Duhon (800M), and Lauren Centrowitz (1600M). The Stanford women finished third at this season's NCAA Indoor Championships in the event. They will be running a slightly different team with the loss of Arianna Lambie who has used her eligibility outdoors.

Hari Mix was named the Pac-10 male track athlete of the week on Monday after a personal best in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays over the weekend. Mix becomes the first Stanford track and field athlete to win an athlete of the week honor so far this season. At the Mt. SAC Relays, Mix ran a time of 13:56.28 to earn a regional standard. The time was a personal best for Mix who went sub-14 minutes in the 5,000 meters for the first time in his career.

Stanford will return to Cobb Track and Angel Field next Sunday, May 4 when the host the Peyton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. The meet will include some of the best competition the Cardinal will face all season.
