Barte, Yen Lead Charge On Opening Day Of Pac-10 Championships

STANFORD, Calif.- Freshmen Hilary Barte and Jennifer Yen advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective divisions, leading the way for Stanford on the opening day of competition at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif.
The top seed in the championship division, Barte improved to 27-5 overall with a pair of straight-set wins. She defeated Washington State's Aleksandra Stefanova 6-2, 6-1 before cruising past California's Bojana Bobusic 6-3, 6-3. Barte has not lost a match in two months (Feb. 20 at California) and has won 19 in a row while dropping only three sets during that stretch.
The top seed in the invitational division, Yen followed a first-round bye with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 triumph over USC's Lyndsay Kinstler. Yen has won four straight matches and is now 17-8 on the year.
Barte and Yen will compete in quarterfinal matches on Friday at 11 a.m., with Barte facing Claire Ilcinkas of California while Yen battles Alex McGoodwin of UCLA.
Also playing in the championship division, sophomore Lindsay Burdette downed Oregon's Carmen Seremeta 6-4, 6-0 in her opening match but fell to UCLA's Riza Zalameda 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 16. Meanwhile, freshman Carolyn McVeigh fell to California's Cristina Visico 6-1, 7-5 in a first-round match.
Junior Isamarie Perez suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Washington's Vanja Radunovic in the invitational draw.
Singles play resumes Friday while doubles play gets underway.
