Bears Off To Strong Start at Brutus Hamilton Invitational

BERKELEY - The California track and field team won four events in the first day of the Brutus Hamilton Invitational Friday at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears took top honors in the women's 200 meters, the men's shot put, the women's pole vault and the men's 200 meters.
For the third consecutive meet, junior Katie Morgan took first in the women's pole vault. Morgan, the current school record holder in the event, earned a mark of 13-1.75 (4.01m) to claim top honors.
Cal also dominated in men's shot put, with junior Martin Maric and senior Craig Kent taking first and second, respectively. Maric improved on each of his throws to finish with a top mark of 188-10 (57.57m), while Kent took second at 168-10 (51.46m). Redshirt freshman Patrick Kowalsky took sixth with a new personal-best mark of 156-03 (47.63m).
In the women's 200 meters, junior Kristin Holmes and freshman Hayley Huxtable finished first and second, respectively. Both runners posted new PRs as Holmes crossed the finish line at 24.49 and Huxtable at 24.65.
Another victory for the Bears on the track came by freshman Keagan Wethington in the 200 meters. Wethington clocked a 22.11.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, junior Jake Hanson tied for second in his section, clocking a time of 51.80. In the third section of the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Justin Ta took third with a personal-best 55.27.
In the men's pole vault section A, sophomore Ryan Shuler took fourth overall with a regional-qualifying mark of 16-6.75 (5.05m). In the section B men's pole vault, junior Andrew Stevens tied for first with his score of 15-1.00 (4.60m).
Three other top-three finishes for Cal was sophomore Alison Greggor clocking a 17:10.71 to lead the Bears and take third overall in the 5000 meters, junior Francesca Weems taking second in the 800 at 2:18.49 and Holmes claiming third overall in the women's long jump at 19-4.75 (5.91m).
The Brutus Hamilton Invitational continues tomorrow at Edwards Stadium. Running events begin at 10:30 a.m. and field events start at 11 a.m.
