Merry Leads Diamond Dawgs Past UCLA, 5-2

April 25, 2008

SEATTLE - Junior starter Jorden Merry held UCLA to two runs on four hits over eight innings, tying his career-high with nine strikeouts, as the Washington baseball team opened a three-game series with a 5-2 win over the Bruins Friday night at Husky Ballpark.

Merry, a right-hander from Pasco, improved his spotless record to 6-0 on the season. Washington got a two-run homer from Troy Scott and a solo shot from Kyle Conley to account for their first three runs.

Washington moved back to .500 in Pac-10 play, improving to 5-5 in the conference and 25-14 overall. UCLA dropped to 4-6 in the Pac-10 and 20-17 overall.

Bruins starter Tim Murphy (3-5) suffered the loss despite a solid outing. In his seven innings, he gave up three runs on five hits.

UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Alden Carrithers led off the game with a double to the gap in left-center. He took third on a Jermaine Curtis bunt and then scored on a wild pitch.

Washington answered in the second. With Sean Meehan aboard on a two-out walk, fellow freshman Scott drove his fifth home run of the season out to right, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.

The Huskies and Bruins then traded runs in the third. Carrithers led off with a walk and, after a Jermaine Curtis double, scored on a groundout. But, in the bottom of the third, UW went back on top, 3-2, on Conley's 10th home run of the season, a solo shot to right.

The Dawgs added two runs in the eighth when Conley led off with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch and Aaron Russell walked and came in on an RBI double from pinch hitter Jake Rife.

Husky lefty Nick Haughian, scheduled to start Sunday, came out of the bullpen to pitch the ninth and earned the save in his first relief outing of the season, striking out the side in order.

The Huskies and Bruins continue the three-game series Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. game and Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. start. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
