While a group of the Stanford track and field athletes competed at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. it was the Stanford men's distance medley that highlighted the day at the Penn Relays.

The Cardinal men finished second in the DMR at the Penn Relays with a time of 9:33.16. Texas won the event with a time of 9:32.89 to just edge the Cardinal. The Stanford team was made up of Garrett Heath, Andrew Dargie, Michael Garcia, and Russell Brown.

Heath got the Cardinal out to a lead after the first leg with a split of 2:55.9 for 1,200 meters. Next up were Dargie in the 400 meters with a split of 45.8 seconds and Garcia in the 800 meters with a split of 1:50.1. The anchor belonged to Brown who slightly trailed Leo Manzano of Texas when he received the baton. Despite running a faster split (4:01.4) he was just edged by the longhorn national champion.

Despite settling for second, the Stanford middle-distance crew served notice that they will be a force to be reckoned with throughout the season.

In Berkeley, the Cardinal were led by Melissa Yunghans in the hammer. Yunghans established a regional standard with a toss of 177-8.

Also with a season best was Lauren Stewart in the 200 meters with a time of 25.48 seconds.

In the long jump Myles Bradley (22-3 ½) and Griffin Mathew (19-3 ¼) competed in the event for the first time this season, both just missing regional qualifiers.
