Bruins Take Series With 4-3 Win Over UW

April 27, 2008

SEATTLE - UCLA scored three runs in the eighth to overcome a 3-1 deficit and earned a series win with a 4-3 victory over the Washington baseball team Sunday at Husky Ballpark.

The Bruins (22-17 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-10) took the three-game series with wins Saturday and Sunday after the Huskies (25-16 overall, 5-7 in the Pac-10) won on Friday.

UCLA lefty Gavin Brooks (5-2) held the UW to three runs (two earned) on seven hits over seven-plus innings. Two of his eight strikeouts came to end an inning with the bases loaded. Brendan Lafferty threw the final two innings to pick up the save.

Husky southpaw Nick Haughian (4-4) was charged with the loss. The junior went the distance, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out eight.

UCLA opened the game with a run in the top of the first as Jermaine Curtis drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored when Casey Haerther singled up the middle with two outs.

The Huskies had base hits in each of the first three innings and even left the bases loaded in the second, but didn't break through in the runs column until the fourth inning. With two on and two outs, Husky catcher Joey Dunn, who struck out with the sacks full to end the second, came through, lacing a single through the left side to score Ty Rasmussen to tie the score at 1-1. But, the throw to the plate from left field got past the catcher and allowed Troy Scott to come across with the go-ahead run, giving the UW a 2-1 lead.

Washington tacked on another in the fifth. With runners at first and third, freshman center fielder Sean Meehan lined a single off the foot off the pitcher, allowing Bradley Boyer to score to make it 3-1.

The Bruins, unable to get a runner past second base since scoring in the first, rallied in the eighth. After singles from Alden Carrithers and Curtis put runners at the corners with no outs, Brandon Crawford hit a possible double-play grounder off the glove of UW shortstop Doug Cherry for an error as Carrithers scored. Haerther followed with a sharp single through the left side, tying the game a 3-3.

After a strikeout, Crawford stole third and then scored on a safety squeeze bunt from Mickey Weisser, putting the Bruins in front, 4-3.

Next up, the Huskies play host to the University of British Columbia in a 6:30 p.m. game Tuesday at Husky Ballpark. While the game will count in UBC's stats, it will serve as an exhibition for the Huskies. The Dawgs return to Pac-10 action next weekend with a three-game series against USC in Los Angeles.
