Cal Holds Huskies to Two Hits in 3-1 Win

April 27, 2008

BERKELEY, Calif. - Three California pitchers combined to hold No. 22 Washington to two hits as the 21st-ranked Golden Bears picked up a 3-1 win over the Huskies on Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field in Pac-10 Conference softball action.

Washington (26-18-1, 5-9 Pac-10) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Alicia Blake that scored Amanda Fleischman. But Blake's single was all the Huskies could manage until Dru Hester singled in the seventh inning.

California (37-20, 5-10 Pac-10) responded back in the bottom half of the first with two runs. Gina Leomiti had an RBI-single and Vernae Sevilla added a run-scoring sacrifice fly to put Cal up 2-1.

A solo home run by Valerie Arioto in the fourth inning put the Golden Bears up 3-1.

Aleah Macon took the loss for the Huskies after giving up six hits, two earned runs and three walks in six innings. She struck out five and fell to 15-11 on the year.

Arioto (7-3) picked up the win after pitching the third and fourth innings. She walked two and struck out two. Marissa Drewrey earned her first save of the season after pitching the final three innings.

Washington returns to Seattle for three Pac-10 games next weekend against the Arizona schools. First up is a 1:00 p.m. game on Friday against Arizona State.

Notes: Cal has a 32-27 lead in the all-time series, but the Huskies did win the season series by winning two of three against the Golden Bears ... Washington is now 7-12 against teams ranked in the Top 25 ... the Huskies committed two errors in the game, marking the first time they have done that since a March 22 game against Utah.
