Bruin Golfers Secure Top Seed in NCAA Central Regional

April 28, 2008

The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team secured the No.1 seed in the NCAA Central Region and will compete at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, May 8-10.

The Bruins, winners of three tournaments this year, will venture out of the West Regional for just the second time in 16 years of the regional format. The Bruins' 2008 trip marks the second straight year they have been sent out of the West.

'Quite frankly, we welcome the opportunity to play on a tough course like the University of Texas Golf Club,' said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. 'Playing a tougher golf course more closely resembles the conditions -- both physically and mentally -- that we'll encounter at the NCAA Championship.'

Last season, the Bruins captured second place at the East Regional at the University Club at Louisiana State. Sydnee Michaels, then a freshman, won medalist honors with a school-record score of 203 (-13).

In regional competition under Forsyth, the Bruins have bettered the NCAA regional cut line seven straight times with three victories (2002, '04 and '05) and two individual champions (Michaels and Hannah Jun). Since the streak began with a fourth place finish in 2001, the Bruins have finished in the Top 5 each year.

USC is the top seed in the West Regional, which will be held at Lincoln Hills CC in Lincoln, CA, and Duke is the top seed in the East Regional, which will be held at the University of Georgia.

The top eight teams at each of the three regional sites qualify for the NCAA Championship after 54 holes of stroke play. The University of New Mexico will host the national championship tournament, May 20-23 at its campus course.
