Three Cardinal Wrestlers Place At FILA Junior Nationals

Las Vegas, Nev. - Three Cardinal wrestlers placed at the FILA Junior National Championships in Las Vegas over the weekend. Sophomore Zack Giesen, freshmen Austin Quarles and freshman Nick Amuchastegui battled for places in the top eight at the event.
Competing at 84 kg, two-time NCAA qualifier Giesen (4-3) won his first three bouts before dropping to the consolation bracket. The Grants Pass, Ore. native battled back to reach the seventh place match, and injury defaulted to take eighth.
Amuchastegui, who redshirted his first year on the Farm in 2007-08, won his first five matches to advance to the championship bout at 74 kg. The Talent, Ore. native lost a 3-3, 2-0, 7-4 decision in the title match to take second place.
Competing at 50 kg, Quarles (1-2) defeated Steven Romero to advance to the third place match. The Cardinal freshman lost a 2-1, 6-0 decision and took fourth place.
As top six placers, Quarles and Amuchastegui both qualify for the 2008 FILA Junior World Team Training Camp and World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 23-24.
Seven other Stanford freshmen also competed at the event: Anton Scherba (1-2), Murdoch Miller (0-2), Porfirio Madrigal (2-2), Kyle Barrett (3-2), Max Rosefigura (1-2), Steve Scheele (0-2) and Blair Matsuura (0-2).
