Huskies Sign Free Agent Contracts

April 29, 2008

SEATTLE - Five players from last year's University of Washington football team have signed free agent contracts with teams in the National Football League following last weekend's NFL Draft, according to league and team reports.

Bay Area natives defensive end Greyson Gunheim (Sebastopol, Calif.) and running back Louis Rankin (Stockton, Calif.) signed with the Oakland Raiders. Cornerback Roy Lewis (Los Angeles, Calif.) and defensive tackle Jordan Reffett (Moses Lake, Wash.) signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And, Seattle-area receiver Anthony Russo (Lakewood, Wash.) signed with the hometown Seattle Seahawks.

Other unconfirmed reports have offensive lineman Chad Macklin (Visalia, Calif.) signing with the Minnesota Vikings and receiver Marcel Reece (Hesperia, Calif.) inking a deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Russo, a graduate of Lakes High School, led Washington in receiving last season with team highs in catches (49) and yards (766). He finished his Husky career ranked sixth in school history with 122 career receptions and ranked fifth in Husky lore with 1,944 career receiving yards.

Rankin became the first 1,000-yard rusher at Washington since Rashaan Shehee in 1997, passing the 1,000-yard mark in the season's 11th game. He earned second-team all-Pacific-10 Conference honors and was voted by teammates as the team's Most Valuable Player. His 1,294 yards ranked fifth in UW history and he is only the third UW runner ever to post two 200-yard games in a career (both of them came during the 2007 season). Rankin's 2,396 all-purpose yards last season ranks second in UW history.

Gunheim started all 13 games at defensive end and was named a team captain. As a junior he was selected as an honorable mention all-Pac-10 selection. He finished his career with 18 quarterback sacks, which ranks among the top totals in UW history.

Lewis, a cornerback who transferred from San Jose State in 2004, started 33 of his 35 games in three seasons at Washington and was elected team captain following his senior season. He finished second on the team in tackles in 2007 and also returned punts and kickoffs during his career at UW.
