Megan Langenfeld Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week
April 29, 2008
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Sophomore Megan Langenfeld was named Pac-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after playing a big part in the circle in two of the Bruins' three road victories last weekend in the Bay Area.
The Pitcher of the Week award is the second of Langenfeld's career. She also earned the honor on May 15, 2007. The sophomore is the third different Bruin pitcher to receive Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week accolades this season. Senior Anjelica Selden has earned the award three times (Feb. 26, March 11 and April 1) and freshman Donna Kerr was named Pitcher of the Week on March 4. Overall, the Bruins have a conference-best eight Pac-10 Player or Pitcher of the Week recipients. Freshman GiOnna DiSalvatore is a two-time Player of the Week (Feb. 12 and Feb. 26) and freshman Samantha Camuso earned the honor on April 8.
Langenfeld did not allow an earned run in 9 1/3 innings last weekend, striking out nine and recording a win and a save. At #21 California on Friday, Langenfeld pitched a complete-game four-hitter to improve to 7-0 on the season. She allowed two unearned runs and two walks while striking out six, retiring 10 in a row in the game at one point.
On Saturday at #7 Stanford, the sophomore relieved Kerr in the fifth and tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings to set a new UCLA single-season record with her fifth save. She struck out three and walked one.
Langenfeld also provided the Bruins with some help at the plate, going 4-for-9 (.444) with a home run and six runs batted in.
On the year, Langenfeld is second on the team with five home runs and 33 runs batted in, hitting .357. In the circle, she has a 0.98 ERA, which is fourth in the Pac-10, with 53 strikeouts in 50 innings.
The fourth-ranked Bruins (41-5, 13-2 Pac-10) close out their regular-season home schedule this weekend, hosting the Arizona schools. UCLA entertains #10 Arizona (31-15, 8-7) on Friday at 1 p.m. before #1 Arizona State (52-3, 14-1) comes to town for games on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. Both games against Arizona State are sold out. Seniors Krista Colburn, Ashley Herrera, Danielle Peterson and Anjelica Selden will be honored in a pregame cerermony on Sunday.
