USC Men Send Three To NCAA Individual Championships

April 30, 2008

Already seeded No. 6 in the NCAA Team Championships kicking off next weekend, the USC men's tennis team has also secured three players' ticket to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, set to be held May 21-26 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.. Sophomore Robert Farah is the tournament's No. 6 seed for the singles action, joined by senior Kaes Van't Hof and freshman Jaak Poldma as at-large selections. Farah and Van't Hof will also team up as the tournament's No. 2 seed for doubles play.

For Farah and Poldma, this year's NCAA Singles Championships will be the first such appearance of their Trojan careers. Farah stands out as USC's No. 1 singles player in the lineup this year, having earned himself a No. 6 national ranking and racked up an overall singles record of 32-12. He was a perfect 4-0 in dual match play during USC's 2007 NCAA Team Championship competition as a freshman, and has built on that success this season as a sophomore. Poldma has been an impact addition to the Trojan lineup this year as a freshman, posting a 32-6 overall singles record so far in his first season. He carried a 14-match win streak until having to face teammate Farah in the Pac-10 Singles Semifinals last week, and enters this year's NCAA action as the nation's No. 54 ranked player.

Making his second career appearance in the NCAA Singles Championships is senior Van't Hof, who rides an 18-match win streak entering the 2008 postseason after claiming the Pac-10 Singles Championship last week in Ojai. Van't Hof was named an alternate into the 2007 NCAA tournament as the nation's No. 63 ranked player, but was bumped into the NCAA action to come up against eighth-seeded Stephen Bass of Notre Dame. This year, Van't Hof ranks No. 29 in the nation and boasts an overall singles mark of 30-8 after last week's run to the Pac-10 title.

On the doubles side, USC has Pac-10 Doubles Champion pair Farah/Van't Hof lined up as the No. 2 seed into the 2008 NCAA Doubles Championships. Undefeated in dual match play this year and boasting a 33-3 overall record, Farah/Van't Hof ride a 20-match win streak on the way into this year's postseason.

First on the docket for the Trojans is the NCAA Team Championships. USC will host the first and second rounds of the tournament at Marks Stadium on May 10 and 11, opening against Southern at 12 p.m. on May 10. The site winners will move on to the NCAA Round of 16 and beyond running May 15-20 in Tulsa, Okla. Following team competition, the NCAA Singles and Doubles tournaments begin, running May 21-26 in Tulsa.
