No. 22 California Heads North to Face Oregon State, Oregon
May 1, 2008
Berkeley - Fresh off its third walk-off win in the month of April - a 1-0 triumph over UC Davis on Wednesday - the 22nd-ranked California softball team takes its 38-20 record up north for an afternoon affair with Oregon State on Friday at 3:00 p.m., before a pair of games in Eugene on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday at noon vs. the Oregon Ducks.
Cal split with the Beavers in Berkeley on Apr. 12 (lost, 8-0) and Apr. 13 (won, 3-0), and defeated Oregon on April 11 when Valerie smacked a walk-off double in the bottom of the eleventh inning to score Julie Meyer for a 3-2 Golden Bear victory.
The Bears, which have an unofficial NCAA RPI of 27, are looking to finish strong in their last two weekends of conference play for an unprecedented 23rd straight NCAA postseason berth. Cal travels to Arizona and Arizona State next weekend to complete its season.
Cal enters the Oregon State game having won six out of its last 11 games. Freshman Sanoe Kekahuna leads the team in batting at .335, while fellow freshman, Arioto, ranks second at a .333 clip. Arioto in fact leads the Bears in runs (46) and doubles (16). In fact Arioto's double in the seventh inning vs. UC Davis on Wednesday tied her for fifth (with Jessica Parker) for most two-baggers in a season.
Marissa Drewrey notched her 25th win in the circle vs. the Aggies on Wednesday. She nearly had a perfect game, but settled for the one-hit shutout. The sophomore has 10 shutouts this season and has nine games with 10 or more strikeouts.
Oregon State, who fell 2-1 to Oregon on Tuesday, sports a 26-26 record (4-11 Pac-10). The Beavers are 9-4 at home this season and trail the all-time series against the Bears, 62-33.
Oregon (31-22, 3-11 Pac-10) is making a late season run having won five of its last eight games, including wins over Arizona and Portland State. Cal leads the all-time series, 67-32. Neena Bryant leads the Ducks with a .362 batting average.
